These are chocolatey with just the right amount of banana. However, if one wanted to make banana chocolate chip muffins, I would direct them to this Banana Walnut Muffins recipe and say “replace the walnuts with chocolate chips!”
Total time (including baking): 40 min. Makes about 12 muffins.

Ingredients (Substitutions):
- 3 browned bananas
- 1 ½ tbsp oil
- 4 tbsp apple sauce
- 4 Deglet Noor (or 2 Medjool) dates
- 1 egg
- ⅔ cup buttermilk (or milk + lemon juice)
- 1 cup spelt flour
- ½ cup all purpose flour
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- Chocolate chips
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350˚F and butter a muffin tin. If you’re making buttermilk, add a squeeze of lemon juice to ⅔ cup of milk (otherwise, skip this).
- In a processor, combine 3 bananas, 1 ½ tbsp oil, 4 tbsp apple sauce, and 4 Deglet Noor (or 2 Medjool) dates until relatively smooth. Transfer to mixing bowl.
- Mix in 1 egg. Add ⅔ cup buttermilk to the batter and combine.
- In a measuring cup, mix 1 cup spelt flour, ½ cup all purpose flour, ¼ cup cocoa powder, 1 tsp baking powder, and 1 tsp baking soda.
- Add flour mixture to banana mixture along with chocolate chips and mix until just combined.
- Bake at 350˚F for ~25 minutes, until tops are springy.
