Soda Bread

This soda bread is so simple (only flour, buttermilk, baking soda, and salt) and so quick (one hour)! My favorite way to have it is toasted with almond butter, but my family prefers jam and butter — what do you like?

Total time (including baking): 1 hour. Makes one 8″ round loaf.

Materials: Mixing bowl; sheet pan; measuring vessels; spatula. Missing materials or ingredients? Look here.

  • 3 ½ cups Irish or Wholemeal flour
  • 1 ¼ cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 400˚F.
  2. Mix ~3 ½ cups of Irish or Wholemeal flour, 1 ¼ cups of all purpose flour, optional ½ cup of wheat bran, and 1 tsp salt in a large bowl.
  3. Mix in the 2 cups of buttermilk and then the 1 tsp baking soda. The dough may be soft and sticky but should hold its shape on a flat pan.
  4. Use floured hands to transfer to a buttered baking sheet.
  5. Bake at 400˚F for 40-45 minutes.
