Simple Chocolate Icing

Makes enough to thinly coat a cake layer (such as Almond Orange Olive Oil Cake) or a tin of cupcakes (such as Buttermilk Chocolate Cupcakes). Scale accordingly.

Total time (including cooling): 10 min.

Materials: 1 measuring cup.


  • ½ cup (3 oz) chocolate chips
  • 2 tbsp milk (or water or butter)
  • Flavoring, if desired

  1. Melt ½ cup chocolate chips with 2 tbsp milk in the microwave or on the stove.
  2. Add any desired flavoring (such as 1 tsp Grand Marnier, orange zest, almond extract, vanilla, etc.).
  3. Cool slightly, until spreadable, in the fridge (make sure not to cool it too much or it will harden).
